Berenice Olmedo

(Mexico, 1987)

Olmedo creates sculptures and kinetic objects, sensitively exploring the materiality of prosthetics and orthoses. The fusions in her work draw attention to the social dimensions of “disabilities” and the fragilities of accessibility systems, as well as how different bodies adapt to different environments. Beyond her artistic practice, Olmedo has volunteered as an art workshop instructor at the Teleton Children’s Rehabilitation and Inclusion Center (CRIT) in Mexico City.
The iron and silicone sculptures presented at the 14th Mercosul Biennial resemble human bodies, both in form and scale. Composed of synthetic materials, colors, and processes, these pieces invite us to rethink the notion that bodies are solely made of flesh and bone, emphasizing how the use of tools is an intrinsic part of human life, expanding new ways of being and existing in the world.
