Gervane de Paula

Gervane de Paula (Brazil, 1961)

With over four decades of career experience, Gervane de Paula’s practice is primarily rooted in painting and color experimentation, though he also works with sculpture, object creation, drawing, and performance. Born and still residing in Cuiabá, he operates his studio Boca de Arte in the city. His artistic research and practice critically examine the fictions surrounding notions of “center” and “periphery,” “whiteness” and “Blackness”. He commonly does so with an acerbic approach, in which a certain absurd humor prevails, at times articulated through the presence of text.
In partnership with Projeto Ling, which in 2025 features the collaboration of curator Paulo Henrique Silva, the 14th Mercosul Biennial presents a mural by Gervane, curated by Silva. This marks the first time the artist from Mato Grosso exhibits in both Porto Alegre and southern Brazil.

Bio

Gervane de Paula (Brazil, 1961) is a self-taught visual artist. He draws, paints, makes artistic objects, and creates installations. His research uses a sharp sense of humor to reflect on topics such as the notions of center and periphery, the Brazilian Midwest and Southeast, and criticizes the visual arts system and the destruction of essential Brazilian biomes. His first retrospective - “How Good Is to Live in Mato Grosso” - was held last year at the Pinacoteca of São Paulo. In addition, he has shown his work in group and solo exhibitions in Belém do Pará, Fortaleza, La Paz, Rio de Janeiro, and Washington. Nominated for the Pipa Prize (2018). He lives in Cuiabá, Brazil. He participates in the Mercosul Biennial as part of the project LING Apresenta, by Instituto Ling, curated by Paulo Henrique Silva in 2025.
