Wiki Pirela

(Venezuela, 1992)

Wiki Pirela works with a variety of materials and techniques, including drawing, installation, objects, cardboard, and textiles. El paisaje se volvió palabra, a commissioned work for the 14th Mercosul Biennial, can be seen as an exercise in perspective, articulating themes that are central to the artist’s research: territory, migration, and belonging. The installation also reflects Pirela’s autobiographical inquiry into what makes a space a home.
The work, defined by a wooden base, presents a structure that simulates a house, with a mural, sounds, and books—evoking domestic spaces and familiar territories to which we belong. The house the artist refers to is a vessel, a transcendent environment between imagination and memory, comfort and discomfort. The outcome of her process suggests new meanings of place and belonging.
