Celebration is the primordial expression of popular culture. In the Caribbean region of Colombia, sound systems known as picós are fundamental elements of Afro-diasporic expressivity, where the enjoyment of music and dance serves as a form of resistance against domination. Visuality plays an important role in picó culture.
The speakers of these sound systems are adorned with paintings in fluorescent vinyl, acrylic, lacquer, or enamel paints, created using techniques such as airbrushing. The paintings and drawings feature representations of historical figures, celebrities, wild beasts, and gods, all set against the lush Caribbean landscape. William Gutiérrez, known as El Maestro William, is one of the great exponents of this artistic genre. Trained in Fine Arts at the Universidad del Atlántico, this seasoned urban artist is the creator of iconic images that shape the picó imagery in its mission to bring joy—and power—to the people.
